How To: Effortless Flat Iron Beach Waves

 https://minimallyss.blogspot.com/2017/08/how-to-effortless-flat-iron-beach-waves.html

One of the most popular questions that I get asked by clients is how I do my hair to achieve a messy/natural looking beach wave. I always tell them that at first it's hard to do on yourself, but once you keep practicing and get the hang of it, it'll take you about five to ten minutes. The secret? The messier the better!

(**A little background on my hair -- my hair strands are fine, however I have a lot of hair. My hair also has a wavy texture to it so I have the ability to make it really curly if I want, however it's also easy to straighten.)

First thing's first -- let's talk products I apply before I begin! I'll explain each product pictured above (from left to right) and why/when I use them!

(**Side note: I  ALWAYS recommend purchasing products through a salon or reputable store. You may see the exact same products cheaper at drugstores or TJMaxx for example, but those products could be tampered with and end up hurting your hair. Rather be safe than sorry. All products are linked above below the picture.)

Pureology Colour Fanatic:
Okay ladies, this product is my ride or die. I use this on just about every client in the salon. Spray this product into your hair right after you wash it. It has 21 different benefits to help prime, protect, and perfect your hair. I ran out of this product a while back not even thinking anything of it, however I kept wondering why my hair wasn't styling right. Once I added this product back in, I was back in action.

 Oribe Split End Seal:
Next, I apply this product -- working it from the midshaft to the ends. It helps repair split ends up to 94% after the first use and reduces breakage by 65%. Oribe products are a bit more luxurious (hence the higher price point), but the quality is incredible and a little bit goes a long way.

Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse:
Anyone that loves volume or extra body with LOVE this product. I usually like to apply a quarter size right at the root to give a bit of lift. I usually only use this product if I'm going to blow out my hair right away, otherwise I feel like it doesn't give the full effect. If I am letting my hair air dry, I use the 4th product. (**Be careful when applying this product. If you apply too much, good luck getting a brush through your hair. A little bit goes a long way!)

Big Sexy Hair Root Pump:
If I am letting my hair air dry, or even if you're looking for a less expensive alternative to the Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse, this is my go to product for some good lift. I section out pieces of hair around the crown of my head, spray this mousse in, then brush it through. Even if I apply this then let my hair air dry as a sleep, it still seems to give me some good volume the next morning.

Oribe Featherbalm Weightless Styler:
If I am blow drying my hair right after I shower, I will use this product to help give a light hold and smooth away any flyaways -- without having it weigh my hair down. I will apply about a dime size and work it from roots to ends. Sometimes even after my hair is all styled, I will use this product as a finishing product by applying a bit to my ends to help smooth them out and add shine.

 Pureology Hydrate Air Dry Cream:
Since I have a bit of natural wave to my hair, if I am letting it air dry I will use this product instead of the 5th product mentioned. This allows me to play on my texture in the morning with how I style my waves. It's another great light weight product that doesn't weigh my hair down.

Okay phewww -- are you still with me?! Now onto the tutorial!

First step is to section off the hair. To save time, I let my natural wave do it's thing on the underneath of my hair -- remember the messier the better! I will just take my flat iron and straighten just the ends of my hair. Whether you're using a flat iron, wand, or curling iron -- the same look can be achieved, however leaving the ends straight is key to achieving the wavy, beachy look!

Once I have the ends of the underneath straight I will move on to my middle section. I straighten out the ends as I did in the first step, then this is when I start the actual waves.

I take random sized, vertical sections and hold my flat iron vertically. The first section I like to turn away from my face (first picture) and then I like to alternate the way I turn the flat iron to make the waves go in different directions (second picture).

Notice how I flip the way I hold my flat iron in the second picture -- this is just what's comfortable for me, but do what works best for you.

Then I do the same thing on the other side of head. Here is a good picture of how much of the ends I leave out. Also, I like to let my waves stay a bit tighter as they cool.

Once my whole head is done with waves, I will go back through quickly and just straighten out any of the ends that may have gotten a bit too curly in the process.

Dry Texturizing Spray
Next comes (what I believe is) the STAR of this blog post. After I am all done, sometimes I do a light spray of hair spray, but most of the time I go straight for the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. This spray (linked above) has some grit and allows for separation of the waves, while still giving hold and absorbing any oils so your waves stay in place.

To apply this product, I lift up my hair and spray it up into it. This allows for good volume and body throughout. I do a couple sprays on each side and in the back. Too much of this product will definitely make your hair feel very gritty and dirty, so again a little bit goes a long way.

Once I have sprayed the product into the hair, I wait a minute then shake out the waves -- leaving me with voluminous, effortless waves! This process may seem like a lot, but I'm not kidding when I say this literally takes me at most 10 minutes in the morning.

If you have any questions on this technique or any products for your hair type, don't be afraid to reach out to me! I hope this helped and that you all are able to achieve this beachy wave look!
