Big Hair, Don't Care

https://minimallyss.blogspot.com/2018/01/big-hair-dont-care.html

It's no secret that I LOVE volume in my hair. When I was younger, I thought that volume in my hair only happened if I did a crap ton of teasing/back combing. Little did I know that using the right products can help aid in getting GREAT body and texture in my hair.

In this post, I'm going to show you exactly what I use to achieve big hair. Now before I start, let me tell you a bit about my hair type. I have fine hair, but I have a lot of it. It's deceiving because it doesn't look like I have a lot -- until I make it nice and big.

The first step to great hair is starting with a clean slate. I use a clarifying shampoo once a week to help remove any product build up that may be on the hair. I must say when I use clarifying shampoos alone they tend to make my hair a bit more frizzy, so I usually like to go in with a 'regular' shampoo right after. Plus, all of the styling products I use also help in reducing the frizz.

Favorite Clarifying Shampoos:

(P.S. I know this picture says not for retail sale because I got it as a Cosmetologist. However, I linked a similar Aveda product -- it just looks a bit different for consumers!)

Next up, the 'normal' shampoos as well as conditioners. I am a shampoo and conditioner junkie. I am finally down to two different shampoos and conditioners in my shower. (I had four different sets of shampoos and conditioners at one point in the shower at the same time. Imagine how happy Roberto was haha.)

The two shampoos and conditioners I am currently going back and forth between are the Pureology Hydrate Sheer and the Oribe Gold Lust Restore and Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. I purchased the Pureology Hydrate Sheer instead of the original Pureology Hydrate because as I mentioned before my hair is a bit finer and I don't want to weigh it down.

If you know anything about Oribe, you know that it is a luxury product and highly concentrated. I will say that I like this set, but I don't necessarily love it. In saying that, I much more prefer Pureology to Oribe. I feel like the Pureology is a really good care for your hair product, while Oribe just doesn't seem to do that for my hair as much as Pureology does. But I will say, ALL Oribe products smell AMAZING!

Other Shampoo Favorites
(I want to repurchase these, but I'm trying to use up what I have first!)

Other Favorite Conditioners

(** I recommend reading the product description of shampoos and conditioners before buying them. These shampoos and conditioners work for my hair type, but they all offer a variety of shampoos and conditioners that may fit better for your needs than the ones I'm sharing.)

Up next, my favorite -- styling products! I've been trying to keep this part fairly simple and I think after some experimenting I found a good combo to give me volume, but also make my hair soft and eliminate frizz.

Right after I get out of the shower, I always spray Colour Fanatic by Pureology all over my hair. This product has 21 different benefits to prime, protect, and perfect your hair. If there was ever a product that everyone can benefit from no matter what hair type, it's this one! (**Warning: Don't try this product if you're not prepared to become addicted!)

After spraying the Colour Fanatic, I then take a few sections from the temples up and spray in the Root Pump by Big Sexy Hair. This product makes magic happen! However, be careful when applying this because too much will make it difficult to blow dry. I've found that focusing my application from the temples up and doing a couple sprays per section is all you need to get great volume! After I have the product applied (or any product for that matter), I always brush it through to insure that I don't ever have too much product in one spot.

The last product I'll apply while my hair is wet is High Dive by R&Co. What I love about this product is that it doubles as a leave-in conditioner and adds great moisture and shine. I apply less than a dime size of this from the midshaft to the ends of my hair and it leaves my hair soft, but doesn't weighed down.

Blow- Dry TIP!

After I have all of these products into my hair while it is wet, I then blow-dry my hair. (I don't always blow-dry my hair, but when I want volume and body then I do.) I don't do anything fancy when blow-drying my own hair -- however a good tip to get some added volume in the hair is to dry your hair the opposite way you want it to lay. For example, if your hair is laying to the right, push it to the left as you blow dry it so when it lays back over to the right it'll appear more voluminous!

After my hair is dried, I will usually either run a flat iron through it to straighten out the ends or I'll use the flat iron add some effortless waves.  (A common question I receive is how I do my flat iron waves. If you haven't checked it out yet, I did a post with a tutorial on how I achieve that look. I'll link it here!)

Once my hair is styled, I will occasionally go in with a teasing comb or brush if I want some extra volume at the crown. (**Let me know if you guys would like me to do a tutorial on how to achieve the "perfect tease." It sounds weird, but I don't know what else to call it.)

After the tease is in place, I'll spray my Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray that I rediscovered recently and forgot how much I loved it. It really does a great job at keeping your volume in place. If I don't tease my hair then I don't really use a hairspray.

If I add flat iron waves to my hair (which is 99% of the time), then afterwards, I spray a few sprays of Oribe's Dry Texturizing Spray. This helps give an effortless look, but also adds some grit to the hair to help give it body and texture. Be careful spraying too much of this though. You only need a little bit otherwise your hair may feel super gritty!

Once I go through this process and my hair is styled with body and volume, I can usually get a good 3-4 days out of it. I use Big Sexy Hair Dry Shampoo to keep my hair looking fresh, without having to worry if it'll be weighed down.

And there you have it! Those are my 'secrets' to get volume and body in my hair. Once you have your hair styled with volume, it's very easy to turn it into an easy updo the second or third day. Is this something you guys would like to see a post on?

As always, I recommend purchasing products through a salon or reputable store. You may see the exact same products cheaper at drugstores or TJMaxx for example, but those products could be tampered with and end up hurting your hair. Rather be safe than sorry!

Hope this post was helpful. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or post suggestions.

Happy styling!
