Eleven beds. That’s how many different beds we’ve slept in, in six weeks. Some in different countries, some in the homes of family, but all of them were because of us transitioning from place to place.
While I’m thankful for all of the experiences we’ve had, I
have been craving a bed to call my own. And even though we’re abroad and
everything’s different, I’ve wanted a sense of normalcy back in my life. I want
a “home base” – no more living out of suitcases, familiar surroundings of our
things from back home, and organization so I don’t have to keep unpacking just
to pack up again.
As many of you know, our apartment hunt abroad was not the
easiest. There is such a housing crisis in Dublin that every place is in such
high demand, which meant the competition on getting a place was high. We had
been told this wasn’t going to easy, but I think actually experiencing it put
it all in to perspective.
When we arrived to Dublin, we went online and sent out over
ten emails to different places. We heard back from three and scheduled
viewings.
When we went on the apartments tours, it felt as though we
were trying to win over an employer for a job. You see each place we went,
there would be three or more groups of people there at the same time. It was
awkward as we sat there filling out the necessary paperwork knowing that
someone in this room was going to get this apartment, but who would it be?
After we went on the first couple of viewings and saw how it
was, we knew we just had to keep sending out more emails. So the next night, we
sent out twenty-five plus emails. We heard back from a few more and scheduled
those viewings. It was frustrating how often we had to keep checking online for
postings, because they could be gone within hours. Like the one place we
viewed. We saw the add pop up within five minutes of it being posted. We
immediately emailed the guy and he emailed up back to set up a viewing. When we
went to view the place, he said that he had 14 other people coming to view it
as well. Let me just say this was less than two hours after he posted it and
the ad had already been taken down because he had that big of a response.
All together we had seen seven places – seven places out of
thirty some emails. Needless to say as hopeful as I was, I was very discouraged
and never wanted to get my hopes up. But, just as we were filling out yet another
application, we received an email from a place – we’ve been approved!
Instant relief.
And you’ll never guess what happened right after – we got approved
for yet another place. Although it was nice to have options and weigh out the
pros and cons, we went with the first place that we heard back from.
Looking for a place was extremely time consuming. And
sometimes we would be one place and get an email saying to be at the next place
in thirty minutes, so off we were. It was so unpredictable and stressful to say
the least. It’s also crazy to say that the place we ended up getting was the
one place we had always looked at when we first got the word that we were
moving. And I think it’s the perfect space for us to call “home” here in Dublin.
We didn’t think we would be getting it since they literally only had one space
left, but needless to say it all worked out.
No more transitioning from place to place. No more
constantly living out of suitcases like we have been for the past (almost) two
months. No more chaos, but rather organization and everything we have will have
a place. And all of our belongings that
we shipped over will be arriving soon which will be nice to have a sense of
home with us.
While we aren’t moving until the beginning of October, words
can’t describe how excited I am as we continue to have this journey unfold. And
I look forward to how soundless I’m going to sleep in bed number twelve --
knowing the moving chaos is over. Even if it’s just for a little while.
