Perfecting Your Tease

https://minimallyss.blogspot.com/2018/02/perfecting-your-tease.html

When I was younger I always wanted larger hair, but never really understood what it meant or how to achieve that look. Fast forward to my high school years and big hair was definitely my thing.
It's always been a joke between me and my family and friends that I'm the volume queen and always need to have big hair. And now, I'm here to share exactly what I do to help you achieve the big hair you've always wanted!

This post is going to show you how to do a basic tease when your hair is down. You can then take this teasing method and apply it to help achieve maximum volume in looks such as top buns or updos. All you need is a teasing brush or comb and your favorite hairspray.

If you want to see what products I use to prep my hair before I tease it, check that post out here!

Starting in the crown of my head, I section out my first horizontal section. Depending on the type of brush or comb you use as well as the type of hair you have, your sectioning can differ. I usually take the same length and width as the tool I'm using. Since I'm using my teasing brush, I take a section about as long as the brush and take about a 1/2 inch in thickness.

After sectioning that hair out, I'll give it a quick spray then start with the teasing.

Starting about a third of the way down from my scalp, is where I focus my brush on each section that I tease. After placing my brush in my hair, I begin by making a "C" motion. While these two pictures may look very similar, notice my hand placement in each. You can see that in the first picture my knuckles are placed towards the back wall, then after completing my "C" motion they are facing forward in the second picture. This motion will help create a nice cushion in comparison just moving the brush up and down.

After completing the "C" motion two more times on the first section (three "C" motions total), I will give that section a quick spray then flip it over. Taking my next section directly behind my first section, I will do the same exact thing. For each part of my head (the back and two sides), I do three sub-sections of teasing in each.

Once I completed this process for a total of three times in the back, I flip it all back to its "normal" position and give it one more quick spray then move to the side of my head -- letting the back be a little crazy until I'm all finished.

When teasing the front part of my hair, I always take diagonal sections, as pictured above. I find that it gives more shape to the hair versus only taking horizontal sections.

After sectioning out the hair on the first side, I complete the same process as I did in the back. The only difference with the sides is that I continue to take diagonal sections. Once I finish this side, I give it a quick spray and flip the hair over to "hang out" until I finish my last side.

On to the last side of my head, where I will also be taking diagonal sections.

I continue to do this for three sections on this side of the head, using the same motion and techniques that I used in the back of my head.

After I finish the last side, I'll give my whole head another quick spray. By this point my hair is usually looking crazy. But, I like to think that the crazier my head looks, the better the hold will be!

Next comes the smoothing out of the tease. This part can be tricky because you don't want to brush out everything that you just did, but also you don't want to have cushions of hair clumped together making your head look lumpy.

When smoothing out the tease, I lightly glaze of the top of the tease (this is where having a teasing brush or comb makes it a bit easier) while using my other hand to hold the hair up so it doesn't ever get flat. Once the top layer looks smooth I move on to the sides of the head.

After each part of my head is smoothed out, I then grab my hair spray and spray each section.

STYLING TIP!
When spraying sections that you have just teased, lightly hold the hair, slightly pushing it upward and aim your hairspray upward as well. I found that if I spray the hairspray downwards it can actually have the opposite affect -- in which it flattens my hair.  Even if you want volume in general without teasing, try aiming your hairspray upwards!

Once you've sprayed each section, you're all done! YAY!

Here's to long lasting volume. Happy styling!
